| How would a person kill themselves by swallowing, like, a big piece of fabric? Is it possible to do that? I'm not having a lot of luck with Google... (This is purely for research purposes, guys. I'm not planning my own untimely demise or anything of that nature, I promise.) |

The first thing that came to mind was the opening of A Few Good Men, when the two marines were Red Flagging the other cadet and after shoving a rag into his mouth he went into anaphylactic shock and choked to death.
Sure, why not? Cram enough fabric down your throat and you are probably triggering a gag reflex that ends with you choking on your own vomit before you even have a chance to asphyxiate.
Though I guess choking on your own vomit counts as asphyxiation. Either way, it's probably a pretty painful and horrible way to go.
As an aside, I've read books where characters were decapitated by closing car windows and ceiling fans. On the improbability scale, cramming fabric down your throat doesn't even come close to the impossibility of those methods.
Na so hard to do. Fabric big and long so hard to make a neat swallowable ball out of. A longer piece would stay trapped in the throat and cut off the airway. Nasty way to go.

I definitely agree... and even if they swallow it, the idea of it passing through their system isn't that high, especailly if it's a synthetic fiber. So this would cause blockage and back-up all kinds of processes, but a much slower death.
Also, many fabrics are treated with chemicals, depending on where they are getting it and why type. Having these absorbed into the system through their throat could definitely speed demise or at leas the gagging and vomitting. And any breathe through the fabric could make these chemicals travel to the lungs.
Like, my husband can't go into JoAnn Fabrics b/c of the starch they use to keep so many of the cottons and such stiff and unwrinkled. It becomes a very light dust in the air and he has an allergic reaction akin to asthma. If you character has airborne allergies and it was fresh fabric, this would seriously effect them.
BTW- you make my throat hurt and I don't think I'm going to pull my blankets up too high tonight...
There's a Lee Child book where he kills people by having them swallow their own tongues. If that's possible then choking on fabric should be possible. I'd think if anything, no matter what the size, is lodged just right in the throat then it would cause suffocation.
I read this earlier today and dwelled on it. Finally coming to a head with an image of a serial killer stringing up people like popcorn on a Christmas tree with thick wired ribbon and a massive needle forced down the throat and exiting...elsewhere.
I blame you for tonight's nightmare, Stace.
Being a quilter? All I can think is what a waste of good fabric. lol.
Seriously. The person could choke on it. Or maybe from a cat aspect, the strings from the fabric get all tangled in their intestines and they cannot pass anything.
Thanks everyone!
What I'm looking for specifically is the idea that a person couldn't have swallowed a wad of fabric in a certain way, and it would require someone else to have shoved the fabric in there. Hmmm.
One: self-hypnotize yourself to believe you are a LOLcat.
Two: self-hypnotize yourself to believe that the fabric is a CHEEZEBURGER.
Three: Enjoy a rollicking good death!
Wouldn't the idea of choking on fabric sort of require that someone else shoved it in there?
Short a really bad magician and his silks, I can't imagine most people shove fabric in their mouths on purpose. :)
Does this victim have to die by fabric? Could the fabric have been shoved in there post-mortem?
Hi Stace- if someone did force fabric down another person's throat, it is very possibly they choked. I would think it would more be from their gag reflex as fabric is usually breathable, say like sheets. But if the fabric were a leather or vinyl or something else water tight and synthetic, then I could see asphyciation.
And there ends one of the strangest things I've ever said...
