On Dreams and Covers -- and a contest!

posted by Jackie at 9:33 AM

So I was going to post about female characters in 1970s superhero cartoons, but I got sidetracked with gonzo dreams last night.

Apparently, I was having trouble playing an obo.

No, that's not a sexual euphemism. I was supposed to be playing this one tune, on an obo (which, in my dream, was a looooooong clarinet, with a doohicky at one of the ends that made it look like a sideways bong). And the tune was divided into four parts, and the first two had sixteen notes. And my fingers or arms weren't long enough to cover the correct holes at the correct time. And someone...maybe an ex-boyfriend? Either him or Jack Black...was trying to show me how to play the tune.

Yeah, I know. Weird. I don't even play the piano anymore.

Second dream: I was coming home (defined as the house I grew up in) to find a man leaving the house. I didn't know who he was, and I demanded ID from him. Turns out, he was dropping off the ice-cream machine that Dad had ordered. (It looked like one of those freezer chests.) So he left, and then Mom and Dad came home, and Mom got all sorts of pissed off at Dad for ordering this beast of a machine without telling her. There was more, but I was sort of distracted by the possibility of making ice-cream. Because even in a dream, a girl's got to have her priorities.

Huh. Maybe I should have posted about the 1970s superheroines. Next week.

What else can I tell you? Oh yeah -- I've got a new cover. Oooh...

This, my friends, is the cover to the erotic anthology from Avon Red, called A RED HOT VALENTINE'S DAY. I bring the paranormal element to the mix: there's a new Hell novella (Hellvella, baby!) that shows how Daunuan and Jezebel met all those years ago. Demon nooky ensues. (Hey, it's an erotic anthology. What do you expect?) The anthology comes out in January 2009, and it's available for pre-order.

I also have a new Hell short story in the LILITH UNBOUND anthology, from Popcorn Press and edited by Elaine Cunningham. The story is all about how Lillith (spelled "Lilith" for consistency's sake with the rest of the anthology) went from the First Woman to the first mortal demon. And succubus. You know, good times. Appearances by Lucifer, Michael, and Adam! You can get LILITH UNBOUND now, if you so choose. All this, plus about 20 other short stories, from a wide range of authors. Good times, indeed!

I have an extra copy of LILITH right here. I think I'll have a contest and will give the anthology away to one lucky random commenter. Go ahead and comment on either of the two covers, or on your own weird dreams. I'll pick a winner next Sunday.

Have at it!

Very cool covers, Jackie!

Why is it that I can clearly picture Jack Black standing behind you in the typical guy-pretending-to-teach-someone-something-but-really-just-hugging-them-from-behind pose?

Jack: It's easy, little lady, all you have to do...

(The camera cuts to a close-up of mild annoyance on Jackie's face)

Jack (continues):... is put your hands right here.

Jackie: Jack, that's not part of the oboe.

(And then hilarity ensues. Okay, so maybe I still just have medicine head.)

Personally, I very excited about the possibility of an ice cream machine.

Ack. OBOE. OBOE. Sigh. See, that's why I shouldn't post before I have my coffee.

Heh, I can see that as a movie, Jeremy. Yikes.

And Debi, I'm telling you: ice-cream machine. What's not to like?

Ack! I don't dream. Or, I don't remember any of my dreams. But if I did dream, I'd dream about ice cream.

I like the Lilith Unbound cover. :) The other looks more cheesy romance than eroitca. Teehee.

Weird dreams? Alas, I fail majorly when it comes to weird dreams. I have impossibly boring dreams.

My sister though? She is the queen of weird-ass dreams! Seriously. Fighting off zombies with cucumbers? Giant worms living at the bottom of the garden? (definitely too many Tremours movies for her.)

I love both of the covers. Very nice.

I wouldn't mind an ice cream machine either. Which kid (or adult kid) wouldn't like their own ice cream machine at home?

I have some WEIRD dreams all the time. The one I get frequently is where I get bit my snake. That's his way of telling me that he's hungry.

The rest.....wweeeiiiiirrrrddddd

Love the covers too.

Now, a dream. Welll.... after reading the Twilight Series (DON'T LOOK IF YOU DON'T CARE TO SEE A SPOILER!)..

Anyway, after reading the books, I seriously had a dream that some random women would call me and tell me that she has imprinted with my son. They are destined soulmates. She wouldn't tell me who the crap she was, but that she loves my son, who also is currently an infant. Anyway she just kept calling saying, she'll wait for him to grow up. FREAKED ME OUT!

Nice covers! Ice Cream - yummy!

Daun ann, my snake bit me a few times when he was still an adolescent, but that has been in years. No more snapping or trying to swallow my fingers, which is very nice. :)

Weird dreams, Jackie. I have never played a musical instrument, so have not ever dreamed about them.

I may have to get a copy of the valentine anthology for your story alone. :)

Happy Monday.

I'm not a huge fan of the Lilith cover, though the book sounds wonderful to me. I always like seeing what different authors do to a given topic. There is nothing I can say is wrong with the cover, intellectually, but I suppose I always pictured Lilith a little more... sultry, perhaps. Then again, perhaps I shouldn't. :) The other cover makes me laugh a little. I like its gleeful unbridledness.

I think that Elaine, the editor of the Lilith antho, ran a contest that was along the lines of "Name this yoga position" for the Lilith cover. Heh.

They did do a "name the pose" contest. Some of the names in the comments of E.C.'s post were hilarious. My friend's got a story in the book, and we cracked up when we saw the cover, ourselves. Yoga pose is right!

I have very vivid dreams and always have had. Recently I dreamt that my sister and I were on a game show against the kids from the Brady Bunch (I think it was a Hollywood Squares kind of set up, inspired by the opening credits). My sister was asked who the Roman goddess of the hearth was and she said "Vespa!" Since Vesta is a goddess, while Vespa is an Italian scooter, both my dreaming and awake self found that quite amusing.
Later in the dream we were talking about taking our parents out for some entertainment, she said "Let's really show our heads." I think that was supposed to be "Let our hair down" or something. Don't know why my sister was so full of malapropisms in this dream; she's not in real life!
