| Yet it's what I do. Can you smell the irony? So, I'm going to stomp my feet and pout all through this little blog entry (just keep that in mind). You see, I'd much rather make fun of crap, or pornify Oscar nominated film titles, or recount the horrors of my daily life than write about what I do, the mechanics of which, I have a hard time making sound amusing. I'm not adverse to reading about writing--in fact, Stacia's post yesterday reminded me to add some scents to my WIP--and according to some author bloggers, it should be our primary purpose. I'm not sold on that idea. I've gotten it into my head that people read blogs because there's something about the writer's voice that resonates for them, whether it's a political stance, a similarity to their fiction, or a sense of humor (I'm kind of counting on that). I've tried to follow the program, but it's a struggle. I don't feel like an expert, in any sense of the word, so everytime I try to speak on description or showing vs. telling, I tense up in my gut. I feel like I'm trying to hard. You know what I mean. I've seen blogs by writers that have gotten that same advice and their posts are more forced than an impacted bowel and half as interesting. I'm certainly not going to point fingers because I can't say mine are any better. But I need to stick to what I do well. Write what you know, is--I guess--what I'm ultimately saying. Anyone know of a blog, one devoted to the mechanics of writing and the business of publishing, they think consistently delivers info about writing in an interesting and valuable way? |

Nope. :) I know when I started my own blog, I had this hope of doing a writing-centric blog. I think that lasted about a month before I started including everything from personal struggles to game writing, mainly because I can't separate myself from myself as well as I could.
Most of the pure writing blogs are... kind of like word of the day lists. They mention some topic, then move on without really a "plot" as it were.
I mainly read blogs for personalities, not what they write (though I'll buy it anyways because if I like to read the blog, I'll probably like to read the novel too).
Anne Mini's Author! Author! blog is pretty good.
I'd also like to think my own craft posts are pretty entertaining. ;)
Here's the thing about writing-focused blogs: they're mostly of interest to other writers. So, are you blogging to talk shop (which can be both fun and educational), or are you blogging to charm readers over to the dark side (the fab promo op blogging is touted to be)?
I personally think a combo is the way to go, something for everybody.
And in the name of all that's holy, whatever you blog about, keep it fun. When I identify a good source of amusement, I keep coming back for more.

My problem is, I feel like my life is so dull. And it feels sometimes like a writer's blog is supposed to be about writing. But writing about writing gets boring.
I do try to mix it up though.
I found a great writing-related blog from Morgan Hawke. Her blog gives a no-bs crash course on how to craft and sell your work, mostly in her genre (dark erotica)but the advice works across the board. She hasn't blogged in months but i periodically go back to re-read her posts. They're fun and damned informative!
Oh yeah, normally my life would be boring as hell, but eventually I have to leave home and that's when the weird magnet kicks in.
