What Does Your To Be Read Pile Say About You?

posted by Mark at 11:59 PM

Let's start this one off with the list...

The Accidental Werewolf by Dakota Cassidy
War of the Oaks by Emma Bull
Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin
Street Magic by Caitlin Kittredge
When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris
World War Z by Max Brooks
The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril by Paul Malmont
Black Magic Woman by Justin Gustainis
The Tomb by F. Paul Wilson
Such a Pretty Fat by Jen Lancaster
Hell's Belles by Jackie Kessler
Heartsick by Chelsea Cain
One Mississippi by Mark Childress
The Night Gardener by George Pellicanos
Greywalker by Kat Richardson
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
A Miracle at Speedy Motors by Alexander McCall Smith
Saving Fish from Drowning by Amy Tan
Bloodangel by Justine Musk
Duma Key by Stephen King
The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon
Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk

Okay, so what does it say?

1. The zombie guy hasn't read World War Z yet? That's pure laziness any way you slice it. You probably won't be surprised that I've not read Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide, either. Such a slacker. Seriously, any ideas I've formed on the subject have come from the movies...and my own fractured mind.

2. I'm more likely to pick up mysteries, comedies and horror more than my own genre, which is odd because I kind of see urban fantasy as a mixture of those three anyway. Now, that said. I buy up every urban fantasy title I can find and some paranormal romance, so I'm totally supportive that way.

3. I should be reading a couple of romances, just to get a feel for their structure. Despite being terribly abrasive and self absorbed, in the next two books, Amanda is getting a romantic arc that's going to test her ability to look beyond her own needs (in a comic way, of course--that was almost sounding serious).

4. I totally read my friend's books before others in the genre. Lucky for me, they're writing different enough stuff not to become monotonous. As soon as the material gets too homogenous, it's time to restructure friendships. I think you know what I'm talking about.

5. David Sedaris MUST be read within two days of the release of his book. This is not optional. He's a God of observational humor and a huge influence. Jen Lancaster is a close second (I challenge people that love Happy Hour to NOT laugh themselves into a pee puddle while reading Jen's Bitter is the New Black).

6. I read a lot of books based on recommendations. The awesome Jessica Morrell (she of the endless supply of writing knowledge) told me that Pellicanos kicks out dialogue so fierce, you can hear it in your head. Hill is getting a reputation for creeping people out (and I kinda like that).

7. I'm heavily influenced by my experiences. I picked up F. Paul Wilson's The Tomb based on seeing him perform Hotel California in full-on zombie butler drag at RT. Dakota, who is a bomb ass chick, forbade me to read her book, thereby forcing it to the top of the pile. Alexander McCall Smith did this amazing presentation at Pacific Lutheran U. last week (1600 people showed up to an author event--how amazing is that?).

8. My book club selections stand out like a Red-Headed Stepchild (winks @ Jaye). Anyone care to guess?

What's on your list? And better yet, why?

Good list... though yours is incredibly short... then again, I rarely find time to read now-a-days. I think I'll make my goal a book every two weeks. That at least will get me through a dozen more books this year. At that rate, I'll run out of books on the pile by July of 2010. *headdesk* What does my pile say? I'm an addict. And I'll try most anything once.

Those are just the books I've put in the queue. I've got 4 big bookcases full and stacks on top of those, in chairs, toilet tanks, night stands, in microwaves, hanging from clothespins off wire hangers in the hall closet.

Let's see, where else...

Mine says that I both have too much time on my hands and nowhere near enough time on my hands.

I'm currently rereading Chris Moore's PRACTICAL DEMONKEEPING. My TBR pile, however, is scattered throughout the house. My next book is going to be Charlaine Harris's FROM DEAD TO WORSE.

(winks back saucily)

I've got books all over the house too. Used to be I'd focus on one book and read it straight through in a couple of days. Now I tend to switch between three or four at a time, which takes so much longer. I think I've come down with reading ADD.

Oh no... I'm still a single book at a time kinda girl... but then again, if it's a good book, I'm done with it in a day, maybe 2 so who has time to start another? The only time I start multiple is if I can't find the fit for my mood and read like the first dozen pages or so.

And Mark- make sure your wife doesn't microwave them... they may be like potatos and blow up if you don't poke holes in them!!

Now see, I write but don't read much (I do read some) paranormal romance. I do however devour urban fantasy which I also write. I'm currently reading Rob Thurman's Nightlife. My husband is on my case to read the Black Company books by Glen Cook which made me stubbornly choose Thurman's book first, even though hubby and I like a lot of the same books...20+ years of marriage does weird things to your head. Next up I got an advance copy of Hidden by Eve Kenin. Driven rocked, so I'm psyched to start Hidden. Then maybe...Exit Strategy by Kelley Armstrong. Or Stacia Kane's book...I haven't bought it yet, but it is on "the list". Then there are the hundred plus other books that are already sitting on my shelves...

Well, my day job is in publishing.. so my office is filled with freebies and copy copies of every fantasy/scifi/paranormal romance that comes through Penguin, which is a lot.. then a lot of non-genre. I try to read less of my genre and pull color from more mainstream books, but to even begin to list things would be folly. Here's a list of what I'm currently reading:

The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
The Book of Joby
The Sandman (entire series, reread)
How to Make Love Like a Porn Star
GTA4 Strategy Guide
and 76 hours of LJ a day!
Heaven's Net is Wide

My TBR pile is a wonderful mixture of Urban Fantasy, Romantic Suspense, Chick Lit, Paranormal Romance, and Mystery. I do happen to have fabulous taste in books, hee.

I'm just too lazy to post them all here.

Bonk,Snuff, the Sonambulist,Ink Exchange,Poison Sleep, the Becoming,Such a Pretty Fat(Mark is right about Bitter is the new Black!!!)Unquiet things.

My TBR pile is 34 copies of Personal Demons. It's that good.

Hi Mark,

You have a good list...mine is full of urban fantasy books, paranormal romances. I have so many books in my tbr pile that it is somewhat embarrassing. I simply cannot stop myself from buying what I want even if I don't really have the time and to top it off I am like Melissa and I would be fine if I did not add to my pile for several years. But even putting that down in print...gives me a bad feeling. I have to buy, buy, and buy. My husband says that the books are overrunning the house and if I don't stop we may to get rid of a child or two...lol.

Anton, I have How to Make Love Like a Porn Star in my pile too.

May 7, 2008 11:30 PM

At last count, there were 200 books in my TBR mountain--mostly romance. Why? Because there aren't enough hours in the day, that's why, and RL keeps demanding I do something other than read.

:sigh:

May 8, 2008 10:30 AM

What Anton's not telling you all is that he posed for all the pictures in How to Make Love Like a Porn Star... just so you know. That's his... head. *blink*

May 8, 2008 11:00 AM

Kim = green with envy of Antons day job.

*looks up to the sky and shakes fist* Why oh why can't I have a cool job like that?!?

May 8, 2008 12:08 PM

Mark,

Oddly enough, Jen Lancaster just walked by my office...

May 8, 2008 3:15 PM

I'm late to the game, but here is my TBR pile (currently as this will change by tonight as I talk my husband into giving me my mother's day gift from the kid's early.

GODDESS OF LOVE
GODDESS OF THE ROSE by P.C. Cast
Madhouse by Rob Thurman (reading currently)
Myth Directions Robert Asprin
Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning (half way finished)
Grave Surprise by Charliane Harris
Grave Sight by Charlaine Harris
Grimspace by Ann Aguirre
Watchers in the Night by Jenna Black
Divine by Choice by P.C. Cast
Staying Dead by Laura Anne Gilman
Fairyville by Emma Holly
Thunderbird Falls by C.E. Murphy
The Vampire Queen's Servant by Joey Hill.

*sigh* I haven't even included the YA books or the stack of books in my bedroom that I bought recently.

What does it say about me? I love fantasy type stories. Especially dark fantasy. I also spend wayy to much money on books and should probably seek help. Will I? Hell no! Must have more soon as I am no longer sick and can actually read again without the world spinning. Go me!

May 9, 2008 12:15 PM

OMG you have NOT read Dakota's book yet? Don't make me come accross country to smack the crap out of you.... I will be breezing through Seattle in September and I am sure I can make a pit stop if I NEED to.
