Gettin' Some Play

posted by Jaye Wells at 11:59 PM

It's Friday at the League, and we all know what that means--Jaye Day.

Unfortunately, there'll be no interesting list of cool things I've done because, frankly, nothing I've done beats being a phone psychic.

So I decided instead to share with you the play list for my debut novel, RED-HEADED STEPCHILD. I figure since none of you can read the book until next April (start saving now, people), you could at least get a taste of the music that influenced its writing.

Here goes:
Voodoo by Godsmack
Bodies by Drowning Pool
Red-Headed Stepchild by Golden Smog
Coming Undone by Korn
Breathe by The Prodigy
Temptation Awaits by Garbage
Push It by Garbage
Blood Sugar Sex Magic by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Apple of Sodom by Marilyn Manson
Fatal by The RZA
Heirate Mich by Rammstein
Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes
The Witch by The Cult
Lazy Eye by The Silversun Pickups
Under the Milkyway by The Church
Cuts You Up by Peter Murphy

A lot of these songs are purely to get me in the mood for writing some ass-kicking scenes, and, yes, there are many of those. Others reflect specific things about certain characters. And, in case you're wondering, the title of the book didn't come from the Golden Smog song, even though I've loved it for years.

Maybe if I was smart, like Mark, I'd have figured out a way to include the lists in the book itself. But, since that's not an option, I'm thinking about making the complete play list available on iTunes when the book comes out. What do you all think? Should more authors publish their play lists as part of their book extras? Or is this just a lame attempt on my part to have something to blog about? Discuss.

Good Morning Jaye,

You were up mighty early posting this morning.

The playlist sounds great...okay, there were a few songs I did not know, but I will have to check them out! I think it would be fun to have the playlist available while you are reading the book.

Have a great day and weekend.

Lori, not up early. Just scheduled my post ahead of time. This isn't all music I listen to daily. Some of it's stuff I found specifically for a particular reason in the book. Hope you have a great weekend too.

I think I'd punch someone if I listened to that much aggressive music in a row.

Ah, college...

Todd's right, I just listened to your playlist, drove over to my mom's and socked her in the shoulder.

Thanks, Jaye.

I don't know about making an iTunes list... if it's free for you to set-up, sure! If not, I would just post the list on your website with obvious connection to your book. :) Can't wait to read it!!

Hey Jaye, I'm all for the play list to compliment the literary piece. I write with music, it's in my books, both implicitly and explicitly (less so for my historical fiction). I think it might be a result of our MTV upbringing. Can you watch anything in life and not see it in slow-mo with music edited in? I can't. So it's there, making some people crazy and others get it right off the bat. Yes, I say yes to the Red-Headed iTunes play list.

funny, the only song that goes through my head for the entirety of writing (or reading, really) my book is "Baby Elephant Walk"...

I like seeing playlists in books, but unless I recognize the music (which is fairly rare for me--I listen to a lot of music but don't know song titles or groups very well, unless I've actually purchased their albums), they're kind of like a foreign language. Look, it's an interesting list of... stuff I don't know. But if I did, that'd be really cool! And every once in awhile I do see a song I like make a list, and then I feel, somehow, more in the know.

Whatcha listenin' to now?

I'm getting my nouvelle 80s goth gloom on with White Rose Movement.

(though I have a hard time taking them seriously with the word "movement" in their band name)

Anton, I knew some frat boys in college with a special affinity for the Elephant Walk, but I think you're talking about something else.

Hi Jaye.
I love when author's make playlists for their novels. I think putting the list on your website, as an addendum in the book (I believe Melissa Marr has it in both those places.. at least for Wicked Lovely). I don't think it costs anything to create a playlist on iTunes. I've browsed a few there, but honestly never purchased one. But I say go for it! It might even get some random iTuner-person interested in your book, right? So why not?

May 9, 2008 7:03 PM

Hi Christine. I'd looked into and knew creating the list is free. Like you said, maybe someone will stumble upon it. Or maybe some reader might discover their new favorite song.

I heartily approve of this playlist.

I do entire mix CDs for my characters and stories, since music plays such a HUGE part in creativity for me. I have a very cinematic imagination, and every grand movie needs a good soundtrack!

Playlist! Playlist! Rock on!

At one point, I'm having an entire music section on my website.

(Note to self: write the damn content already for the music section on the website.)

I think that is an awesome idea !

I think a playlist for what I listened to while writing my book would be pretty damn scary and iTunes might shut down if I put them all in a row. Just having Elton John, Nine Inch Nails, Marty Robbins, and Rachmaninoff on the same page might bring on the Apocalypse.

Lee, now that's funny. However, you're missing the key ingredient for apocalypse: The Macarena.

I love seeing what authors listen to...although I have to wonder...Marry Me by Rammstein?? Do you even know what they are singing?? I prefer Engel and Sonne.

May 12, 2008 12:19 PM

Amber, I know a little German, but it's more the sound of the song that inspired me, if that makes sense.
