Book Club: Personal Demons by Stacia Kane

posted by Mark at 11:18 AM

Okay League readers, it's book club time. Seems like a while since Stacia through me one for Happy Hour and here we are chatting up Personal Demons. What could be a more appropriate time than during Demon Week?

We won't be doing a spoiler thread until later in the week, so even if you haven't read PD yet, you might want to swing by just to chat with Stacia or anyone else, really. We're all usually just hovering around talking about Stacia, anyway.

I did a review of Stacia's book over at my blog, so if you want to check that out, then clicky. But remember, this isn't a place for reviews, or whether you liked it or didn't. That's not the point.

What is the point?

Well, today it's all about the demons. Stacia served 'em up three different ways. You got your scary, sexy and comic all in one. Who was (were) your favorite(s)? Why?

Let's get it goin'!

I can't pick just one, because I have to say I was really interested in the whole cosmology (demonology?) that Kane drew up. It was a novel take on the idea of demons, given the standard genre tropes.

Now. Me. I can pick.

Malleus, Mallificarum and Spud.

I wants more, more, more!

I could use some fashion hair and makeup demons.

Zombies, OTOH. Dude, there better not be any more!

Malleus, Mallificarum and Spud, the Three Stooges of Demons....discuss.

Greyson was just...oh my gosh yummy. He can flop in front of my TV any day.

The trio caught my heart though. When they have some moments that they're really in trouble I found myself MUCH more worried about them than Greyson. I was pretty sure the yummy demon would make it. I wasn't so sure about the cockney boys.

and they like steak pie. Who can go wrong with steak pie.

Hey `j, that reminds me. Has anyone made the steak pie from the recipe in the back?

SPUD!! I LOVE SPUD!!! The trio rocked, but Spud took my heart. *sigh* I love him in so many ways. But then again, I like them big and silent. Tis what I married... heehee....

Heh, Melissa, I wish I'd married big and silent. So, yeah, spud is just a total sweetie. Although Dante did kinda give me a case of the hots...

Uh oh, Stace. Looks like you hit the nail on the horny.

How many of y'all were turned on by Dante's spiny bumps?

It's okay to share. You're among friends.

Well, Mark, I've always loved spiny bumps, and never more so than when attached to a gorgeous, troublemaking, darkly sardonic demon. I can only imagine all the potential erotic and domestic uses those bumps could be put to: backscratcher, personal *ahem* massager, pie crust divot-maker... the list is endless.

Malleus, Mallificarum and Spud.>>
I totally agree. Who couldn't love um. As for them being the demon 3 stooges...I can see that. But I don't like the 3 stooges(unless one of them is Iggy) so I like these guys/um demons so much more1

Heh...I tried the recipe. Haaaad to. Is yummy.

Hi Stacia and the rest of the League! I just finished Personal Demons and loved it. I'm cracking up because I was talking to Paula (she recently bought my book for Juno! yay) and was telling her that the 3 demon brothers reminded me of the stooges, and here somebody else thought the same. Sounds like they are a hit with everyone!

Hey Linda - thanks for swinging by! People are heaping all kinds of demon love on M, M & S.

I have to say. As silly as this sounds-I liked Dante. He sounds suave, debonair, smart and good looking. I don't always go for the main character, but he definitely peaked my interest and curiousity.

I've looked at the recipe a few times, but haven't felt adventurous enough to try it. Not to mention trying to find a substitute for beer (even if that's not how it's supposed to be made.)

Or figuring out what a "beurre blanc" is, aside from the literal translation.

May 12, 2008 11:29 PM

I cheated on the beer and used a dark beef broth and a little vinegar as a tenderizer. So my flavor on it might have been a bit off, but it was still yummy.

tm, if you really don't want to use the beer, you can use beef stock or water instead, with a little extra Worcestershire sauce. It won't have quite as deep a flavor but it will still be good. :-)

And a buerre blanc is simply flour mixed with water or stock (I use the liquid the meat cooked in) into a slightly runny paste, then mixed into the filling to thicken it.

I loved the three brothers, they crack me up! I need three demon brothers who can do my hair and make me beautiful! haha
