Ah-ha! You gluttons for punishment! Here we are, back to drive Mark Henry's reputation and self-respect into the ground!
Remember, Mark is hanging around, ready to take our abuse and love it like the sub he is give out secret zombie prizes and a free book and all that stuff, so comment away.
So. Footnotes. What did you think of them? How about the recipes and text boxes? In what way did they draw you in? Which one was your favorite (is that a spoiler)? How do you think they added to Amanda's voice? |
At first the footnotes were disconcerting, but I warmed up to them quickly. I liked that the footnotes were like a running mental monologue from the lead character. It was insight into her thoughts, and very humorous.
As for the content in the text boxes I liked that from the start. It was nice touch.
And here I was feeling guilty about how we're laying into Mark and not just discussing his book...
I loved the footnotes. The playlists were probably my favorite. Given discussions (coughJillcough) about character's underwear and other things tangential to the story, that inform us about the characters...it was a nice added view into Amanda and her world.
Personally, I loved the footnotes and insets.
My personal faves were the set lists. Excellent choices, all.
You know, there are people out there that hate those damn footnotes. Think they were extraneous, and they may have been something that I could have incorporated into the main text. I suppose some of them could have but, whatever.
And yet, Road Trip is full of footnotes once again, iPod playlists for the road, and roadside attraction signs!
I loved the idea of doing double jokes, hunting for punchlines. I hope it made the book feel interactive.
I loved the footnotes and boxes! They made reading more of a participatory (er, I think that's a word) experience. They were a neat way to see inside Amanda's head and made the story feel like an adventure shared with friends. I thought they were a neat touch!
I keep meaning to try out some of the recipes.
I think the footnotes and play lists added to the Amanda experience. They were fun and insightful. (whatever that means) :P
I loved the footnotes, and insets, as well. They were funny and really informative - I want to try several of the recipes!
Think footnotes were genius. I predict we'll see a bunch of copycats now.
You should. The ones in the text boxes have all been tested. There is one in the text, The Penitent Abbess, that must not be tried under penalty of worshipping the porcelain God. I made it up without testing it.
Eek!
How about you test it and get back to us?
Uh...ew.
Wendy, I'm afraid it's up to you. You've been assigned the task.
I love the footnotes! They're very creative and funny. I'm glad they aren't incorporated into the text since I don't think a lot of them would have worked that way. Like #21 describing the varieties of Elite donuts. OMG I wanted to try them!
Christine - Mmmmmmmmm donuts. Damn this diet!
Dammit. Fine, I will.
I just hope I don't end up puking on your book.
As you know Mark Iloved the playlists. Especially the goth club ones, and have put them on my ipod.(damn me for being an old goth)I also really liked the footnotes that were sarcastic replies to amanda's own voice. It was hilarious.
Synde
Synde - I did too and played them at my release party.
By the way, I can't get the wifi at Victrola to work for shit. I'm hexing this place before I leave*.
Beware.
*It's probably my shitty wifi card, since Caitlin seems to be having no problem procrastinating.
The footnotes Cracked. Me. Up.
It (and no offense to women in general, being one) felt like a conversation with a friend. I mean, I tell a story and there are like 100 inserts like 'oh, and speaking of blue, I need to buy milk!' and things like that. I think it was like Amanda was telling her story, and these bits were just something that came to mind and she wanted to share. There is a girly-girl in there somewhere beneath the tough blue exterior!! And let's not forget that she's self-important enough to think they are important to add. :) I'd steal it if I had a story it'd fit!! Heehee... actually, I'll leave it to the expert b/c I doubt I could pull them off as well as ole Mark here!!
Favourite: "I'm talking anal, bitches. Don't be coy!"
Have a lovely day! :-)
Missy - that's really nice to hear. But did you laugh so hard you needed a mutsuki?
Tez - Why do I keep wanting to end your name with an "x". Hey Tex. It must be an absence of cowboy friends. Anyway, that footnote is a personal fave.
I think Dear Jill is in Texas...that qualifies her as a cowboy/cowgirl, aye? You just need to Texify her name.
Have a lovely day! :-)
I honestly started skipping over the drink recipes--because I don't actually drink more than once or twice a year, and when I do, it's pretty much straight whiskey (no ice), so I couldn't really relate. ;) The footnotes were great, though, and the parts of the narrative told through the voice of someone taking the attention away from Amanda (how dare they!) were *beautifully* handled. Their inclusion was an enhancement to the narrative.
My verdict is out on the footnotes. At first they were grating on me because I read so fast I kept forgetting them and having to go back. Which prevented me from reaching the ultimate goal THE END and what happens. By the end they were starting to grow on me. Some of them made my drink come out of my nose.
I loved the drinks and especially the play lists.
Will let you know on the footnotes in the next book.
