March Book Club, Part One: Dead to Me by Senor Strout

posted by Mark at 2:22 PM

Oi! League Peeps! Remember when we talked about doing the book club for both Dead to Me and Happy Hour of the Damned? Not gonna happen. I'm going to be out of town or busy with signings for the rest of this week and much of next week so Stacia is going to take the reigns on a week of fun festivities for one of our own. The oh-so pale, terrifically punny, Anton Strout.

He'll be here next week--moreso than usual--chatting with readers about all things Dead to Me. Got a crush on Simon? Let him know. Need Anton to come over and battle an unruly bookcase? It can't hurt to ask.

****

In other League news...

We're coming up on two big releases for two of the League ladies, Ilona and Stacia. Get out there and pre-order Magic Burns and Personal Demons, or better yet, buy them up in the first week, or even better yet, do both.

Speaking of Ilona: The couple that writes together forums together and you can get into it with Ilona and Gordon over at Romantic Times. They're breaking Kate Daniel's world down for you and it doesn't seem any question is off limits (I could be wrong).

Stacia is planning on throwing me a book club event the following week. Until then, you can swing by the Barnes and Noble Paranormal Book Club and harrass me. I'm off to Norwescon, wish me luck at my first fan convention, I'll be dropping by occasionally.

Particularly on the 29th, when I'll post my interview with Rogue author, Rachel Vincent. You'll want to pop by for that bit of comedic torture.

Wait, Anton had a book come out?
I hadn't heard.

I have a book out?!?!?

It's true.

The world moves at such a hectic pace it's hard to know whether you've written anything, at all.

That was deep, Mark. Deep.

I'm looking forward to the Vincent interview. My sister asked to borrow my copy of Stray. I found it, idly popped it open and I got sucked in again. That's a sequel I'm really looking forward to.

Everybody feel free to comment if they can think of good discussions for book club topics, btw. I believe I've learned well from watching Mark, but it's still my first time modding a book club.

All I can say is that I found a copy of Magic Burns today and haven't been able to put it down. Anton as soon as I finish, your book will be next. Abrupt topic change, I really enjoy this blog and I love that I am getting introduced to new authors.
Thanks

Topic suggestion:
Balancing the comic elements with the more straightforward UFfy action. What did readers think and what does Anton have to add on the process?

Simon's power was something I had heard of, but hadn't seen featured before. How did psychometry work as a character's power and as a plot device? If one were to play author, what refinements/suggestions would you have, if any?

Simon's luck with the ladies, living, dead and eventually dead. Discuss. Does the interference of his power with his love life further define his character? Ie, how many guys would have not let the Tamara/Fergus info stop them? Is Simon a sympathetic character or a wuss? If (a), is he a believable sympathetic character or a mere sham "man" designed to draw women buyers into an ongoing series?

Maybe I let devil's advocate get a little out of control there...
