A conversation with my six-year-old daughter

posted by December/Stacia at 1:08 PM

So the girls are playing in the living room. And the little one--Faery--trips over a toy. Not just any toy. A Millenium Falcon, the ones that you get for those little chunky Star Wars toys? We of course have this item.

Anyway, Faery trips and starts to cry.

Me: What happened?

Six-year-old (Princess): Faery tripped and hurt herself on that. (Points)

Me: On what?

Princess: On that spaceship there.

Me: That's not just "a spaceship"! That's the Millenium Falcon!

Princess: What's that?

Me: The Millenium Falcon is--well, it's the fastest ship in the galaxy! It's the ship that made the Kessel run in less than twelve parsecs! (picks up toy, sets it aside). You better not let your daddy hear you call the Millenium Falcon just a spaceship.

The Princess is a huge Ghost Rider fan, too. She wants a poster of him for her wall. One of these days I'll post the picture of her in her Ghost Rider mask--she begged to have it for her birthday. She can name most members of the Justice League. She knows a lot of the characters on Star Trek and loves Buffy.

What geeky things are you passing on to your kids?

Ender's Game. Genius boy saves world--how much more geeky can you get?

our 4-year old knows all the justice league, teen titans, star wars characters, and several Mechs. And she knows a few anime characters :D

You're a risky lass, putting this online where Husband could read, and learn that somewhere along the line, one of his daughters wasn't properly educated about the Millenium Falcon. There will be trouble when he comes home! ;-)

Have a lovely day! :-)

"You better not let your daddy hear you call the Millenium Falcon just a spaceship."

I completely laughed out loud at this. That's just wonderful. Even better, I think, than the parent who taught his kid the noise that one of the WoW monsters makes alongside cow, duck, and lion. ;)

When my husband and I have kids, I have trouble of thinking what we'll pass onto them that *isn't* geekery... ;)

Sadly, the court system won't let me be around children...

I like children.
Broiled, with a light lemon sauce.

My daughter insisted on being Blade for Halloween a year or so ago. She dressed all in black, got a little fake sword and a pleather jacket. We used to watch the Spike Blade tv series together before it was canceled. She absolutely loved it and I'm not sure why. .I mean, I liked it to, but she seems to really connect with it. Very bizarre to see a 2 year old sitting, absolutely transfixed, watching a show like that.

We're crazy geeks though. We role play, letting the kids fill out their own character sheets (not according to the rules of course, they just color in the circles and draw pictures of their characters). We bought them 30 sides dice one year for their stockings (30 sides are big, about golf ball sized).

We have comic everything, pillows, blankets, folders, pencils, cups, plates, deflated Superman mylar balloons taped on the wall. We read comics and graphic novels to the kids sometimes. My daughter (now 4) has decided she's going to collect Inyuasha books. I bought one for me, but she would sit next to me when I was reading and read it. This weekend at the comic book store she was so excited to find it in the used bin.

My son prefers movies. He found a DVD of the Jackie Chan Adventure cartoon series which we used to watch and love. He'll sit and play Pokemon on the game boy when I'm working and our "sick" movie (the one we play when the kids are sick and stuck in bed) is Pokemon.

We love comic book movies, even ones other people seem to not like. The kids sometimes act them out too. They also sometimes set an obstacle course up with the couches and pretend they are running the course from G4's Ninja Warrior.

I could keep going, but you likely got the point like five minutes ago. We do it all, comics, RPG, games, anime...

Ghost Rider rules! Your kids have great taste in comic books.

I guess I'm not geeky enough. I've only taught my year and a half old niece to say "yabba dabba dooo". It's really cute though as she always emphasizes the "dooo" part.:)
