Spoiler Day! Unshapely Things Thread

posted by Mark at 10:57 AM

Two threads today, one for UT and the other for UQ (cause I know you people read it already). I haven't, so I won't be looking in there. I'll leave it up to MDF to check in on those folks who want to venture in.

Use this thread to discuss all things spoilery about Unshapely Things! The ending perhaps. And by all means take Del Franco to task and pry out some new info.

Have fun.

UQ? Are we having a contest to name book three? I'm not above mocking typos, despite making dozens per message myself.

Getting this off my chest. All I want to say is I am anti-Keeva and Connor. She's cool and all, but I am not ready to accept it yet. I mourn for Tansy. I Have a question for Mark if he sees this. Did Brian Froud or H.P. Lovecraft inspire you?

princess allie: anti-Keeva and Connor? As in, a couple?

I loved Froud's pressed fairy book. While I couldn't say his take on fairies was a direct inspiration, I think we might share a certain sense of humor.

As far as Lovecraft, again, I don't know that he was a direct inspiration, but I don't think any fantasy or horror writer can say he doesn't have an impact on those genres whether conscious or unconscious (or deep, icy, hideous conscious).

Don't tell me you cannot feel the sexual tension between the two of them? You can cut it with a knife. It's like Scully and Mulder. But it could just be my imagination and if so that would be swell. I know the Tuatha Dé Danann is a Celtic/Irish thing but the input you put into the Fomorian seemed like something from H.P. Lovecraft or the creature from the black lagoon. Again, it could all just be my imagination.

I couldn't let this week slip by without saying something about some of my favorite lines from the book.

"I hardly came from a line of farmers and never saw much value in dawn except as a sign that maybe I had stayed up late again."

~and~

"Maeve, the Bitch of Tara, Ice Queen, and Iron Ruler."

I laughed so hard when I read these. I amen'd the first one. I can totally sympathize with pre-morning ritual Connor's thoughts on early mornings. The second had me rolling, as well. I love Celtic history and reading stories about the Tuatha De Danann, anyway, but this particular description of Maeve killed me. I'll never be able to read anything about Maeve again without that popping up in the back of my mind.

Princess, I laughed when I read your comments about Connor and Keeva. While I wouldn't be a fan of that particular connection, I have to admit that there seems to be an element of sexual tension between Connor and *several* of the other characters. Don't even get me started on the stray thoughts that have flashed through my head regarding him and the Flit! LOL!

What I like, however, is that everyone else around him seems more concerned about it than he does himself.

princess---oh, yes, now I see where your Lovecraft comment came from, and yes, I'd have to agree that's Lovecraft-inspired. Now that I think of it, lots of the Celtic mythos includes some pretty creepy crawlers. I'm thinking Mr. L's influence will probably pop up again.

re: Keeva and Connor: they're relationship definitely has that edge to it. (I was a little unclear what you meant.) Things will evolve for Connor's love life---in ways that may not seem obvious.

larue--hehe. Yes, what's up with Connor is a subject of much interest to those around him. As time goes on, readers will realize his self-imposed celibacy of the last two years is in marked contrast to previously, so lots of people are wondering what the heck is going on with him.

Mark: I'm a political junkie and one of my favorite parts is the dueling Celtic/Teutonic fae. How much of that backstory do you have mapped out, including the details of Convergance?

February 28, 2008 7:25 PM

Mark: Sorry for the confusion. The way I word it looks like I hated Connor and Keeva. Which I don't. I love how you said Things will evolve for Connor's love life---in ways that may not seem obvious. That's awesome!

Larue: Oh no! Poor Tansy. Also, you mentioned What I like, however, is that everyone else around him seems more concerned about it than he does himself.
This is including myself.

Thomas: You're deep.

I think what I enjoy about the political angle is that both sides seem to want the same thing, which is often on the surface of political debates, but when you start digging into motivations, things get hairy. Throw humans in the middle, and you get the whole disenfranchised angle to place with.

So: What do I know? I know...

…why Convergence happened.
…what happened when it happened.
…what the dark mass is.
…who Connor trusts and why he shouldn’t
…what Bergin Vize wants
…what Maeve wants
…what Donor Elfenkonig wants (have you met him yet?)
…what happens in the last chapter of the series

I don't know whether to curse you or try to hack your hard drive.

Since I have no computer skills to speak of, curse you, MDF, for teasing us!
