| Since I'm a huge doofus and am getting the ball rolling so late in the day, let's just roll Wednesday and Thursday together for a multi-topic extravaganza. I figure you're all flexible enough to roll with that, and if you aren't...well Gary the HS, has plans for you. So here are some things to mull over... Because the Negotiator series is designed as a trilogy, it's important for Heart of Stone to set up the world and begin multiple story arcs. Which of these arcs are you most interested to see run its course? And for purely selfish reasons, I ask, are you more likely to read a series or trilogy, than you would a stand alone novel. Next... Alright let's go ahead and indulge a little fantasy. Which one of the Old Races are you and why? Get to answerin'! |

This is a hard question. In my view I want Tony to end. I know Grit and Tony have history, but gotta say...I don't like him. I want to be invovled in Grit and Janx's debts. I like there relationship.
Personally, a trilogy or series is always better to me beause I feel on the first book the author is just getting to know the characters. I also like seeing the characters grow. For example stupid characters become smarter, hopefully. I have also seen this back fire. So, be careful.
I want to be a dragon. Te-he!
Stand alone or trilogy it doesn't matter to me. If I like the writer or something piques my interest I will read it. The thing with a trilogy is that it can be great or it can be a single idea that tortures you till you pull your hair out.
As for what old race am I? For sure an elf/sidhe...
I'm definitely a series/trilogy reader. It takes some time at the beginning of any book, particularly stand-alones, to invest in the characters enough to want to follow the story being told. With a series, once you "know" the characters, you can immediately immerse yourself in the next book and get caught up in the story right off the bat. I admit that it took me the first hundred pages or so of HOS to get into the book, so the next one will be an immediate connection to who, what and where things are happening.
What race would I want to be... Well, not enough of each was explored in HOS to know what each one is all about. The only race fully explored is the gargoyles, and there's still some mystery left there as well. I'm eager to learn more about the dragons, though. However, I can't say which race I'd want to be until I know what each race is.
I will pick up and read stand alones, trilogies or serieses*- I don't favour one over another. I love 'big' stories (stories that affect many characters, like the classic epic fantasy), but that won't stop me from picking up a stand alone. My current all-time favourite book is a stand-alone, so if I'd been picky I would have really missed out.
If there's an elder race of shifters/werepeople, I want in. If not, I don't know. Maybe an elf.
*They really need to make a decent plural word for series
I can conclusively say there are no elves amongst my Old Races. :)

I want to be a dragon. Even though I don't know anything about Catie's version, I've always had a dragon fascination. I spent way too much time with Zelazney's Road Signs as a kid, I guess.
I tend to prefer series/trilogies. In fact, given my recent disquiet with the way some series seem to be blah-ing around book 8 or 9, trilogies seem really cool right now. Then if the author has more story to tell, there's nothing wrong with another mostly-self-contained trilogy/duology/etc.
To the book at hand...I echo that I would like Tony to go. I understand the purpose of the character and his history with Margrit, but as a completely personal thing, he pushes too many buttons about my day job.
Less projection oriented, I'm interested to see the story of the selkies or how the five races interact. And how Margrit's mom knows good ol' Elisio (sp?).
I agree with TM, I'm interested in the interaction of the races. They seem to have a kind of uneasy co-existence that's very interesting. I want to keep Alban and Margrit in sight, too.
I actually prefer a trilogy or a series, but I won't shun a book for being a standalone. Actually, when I picked up this book, I thought it was a standalone.
I'm mildly interested in the Selkie thing, just because it's sort of weird. However, the Selkies currently seem like they don't have any power, other than maybe swimming. So I'd hope they have something more up their sleeves. Or pelts.
I wanna know which one of the Old Races Catie wants to be.
Bah. I still haven't had time to finish reading this, but all the commentary is making me want to. Dang wedding preparations!
Though being a dragon would be cool.
Here we are with the February book club vote tally. So far...
Already Dead - 2
Blood Engines - 3 1/2
Devil Inside - 2
Nymphos - 4
Unshapely Things - 5 1/2
One more day to change the course of history.
Catie has been thinking about that. She hasn't got a clue, and therefore claims that because it is her world, she is ALL Old Races, and doesn't have to choose. :)

Hmm...if the selkies can interbreed with humans, and there's already a bit of a theme about Margrit's mixed racial heritage, is Murphy leading toward Old Race crossbreeds?
Probably not, but I do love to throw a red herring into the discussion.
tmthomas asks:
...is Murphy leading toward Old Race crossbreeds?
*whistles loudly and tunelessly*
Regarding the story arcs in the Negotiator series - I'm eager to see the tensions between Janx and Elesio escalate to full-out war and to learn about their histories (both individual racial and with each other personally.) As for Margrit, it's a small thing, but I want to see where she lives and what she does after her roommates get married. We've heard the reasons for Tony's erratic behavior in his own words, but I want to know what’s really up with him.
I will pick up a book whether or not it’s a stand alone or part of a trilogy/series, etc. I agree, though, that series can get frustrating. One of my all-time favorite series has had up to an eleven year gap between books.
Hmm, which Old Race am I in regards to the lore of the Negotiator world? I’d have to say Gargoyle with maybe a bit of draconic spunkiness thrown in for good measure. ;)
Someone mentioned Margrit's mixed heritage and I just wanted to say - I LOVED THAT. YES! Mixed race! Since I'm half-half I glom onto such things. Anyway, moving on.
I liked the gargoyles - no moving around in the day is a bummer, but I do like to stay up late and to observe people. The flying, speed, super-hearing, and strength aren't bad either.
Hmm, I forgot to answer the other questions - I don't really think about arcs I want to see run their course because usually I'm just interested in where the author is taking me with them. So I guess I reserve judgement till I see where they go.
I prefer standalone now because I counted and I'm in the middle of over 35 series. It is bad. I need to stop starting more series. Trilogies are better though because I know it ends in 3 books. Not in some unknown number of books. That said, I do get sucked into other series because - ok they sound interesting and I like to read. I'm an addict.
I like the idea of Old Races cross breeds! :D But for some reason I immediately thought of Vampire Selkies... Exsanguinating Seals! LOL!
Okay, it's late, I'll think more on this and write tomorrow when I am more coherent.
I want to see how the Janx arc plays out and if he does turn out to be a "good guy" after all.
Vamps are cool, but I think I'd rather be a dragon or maybe a demon. :)
