| So yesterday we discussed characters who stay with us, and what makes a character stand out. Today we thought we could discuss scenes. Every book I love has a particular scene that really sticks in my head, because it was funny or sexy or exciting, or just a few lines of beautiful detail keep echoing until they're part of me. What scene in Heart of Stone was your favorite, and why? ***Warning again--feel free to post spoilers in the reply, so if you haven't read or haven't finished...read the comments at your own risk!*** |

Good heavens. Nobody's got a favorite scene!
Fine, I shall start by posting *mine*!
I think my favorite scene is Alban's big reveal scene (and I don't just say "big reveal" because he's NEKKID). It was one I had the idea of in mind right from the beginning: I knew that payoff was coming for Margrit, for me, for the reader, and it remained comparatively unchanged through four major, major revisions on the book. I felt like I'd gotten that one right. :)

Favorite scene was when they were discussing names in the sewer.
My favorite scene was in the speak easy. The description was awesome. I could "see" it.
My favorite scene was in Alban's hideaway when Margrit was feeling his and Hajnal's last moments together in Revolutionary France.
For some dastardly reason, the server for The League went down today. I suspect the vampires.
So, Catie - no one's had a chance to comment. I'll go post an all clear on LJ.
I really enjoyed seeing where Alban lives, that sort of vault chamber under the church. It was so very Albany with its candles and leatherbound books. I love learning little things about main characters, like Alban has a library card and that the original church builder took him in. And that was a great moment when they're just sort of trusting each other for the first time and then Margrit asks what he eats, and Alban goes, "Small children." Kidding, of course, but it was funny. Because Margrit can be a bit high strung at times, and at first she believes him, but quickly realizes.
ok once again I am going away from the desired topic but I just wanted to finished what I started with Catie yesterday on Shamanism.
Yes, catie I thought you did a absolutely wonderful job with the spiritual/magical stuff. I have read many of the books you have as well as some decidely darker takes on shamanism.(for instance a book on the Bon traditions..prebuddhism
shamanism) Anyway all this leads to me giving you many kudos and telling you how much I enjoyed the books. I hope to read the new one soon...;-)

*beams lots* You guys have no idea how cool it is to hear some of these scenes come up as favorites. I start reading these comments and start thinking, 'Ooh! I liked that one too!' *laughs*
*giggles lots at Carolyn* That bit still makes me laugh. :)
Hey, Synde, if you wanted to email me some titles of those books about the darker side of shamanism, I'd really appreciate it! cemurphyauthor@gmail.com! :)

Catie, would you be willing to say what inspired that? Was it an amalgam of places you've been, or was something in there an homage to a place you've been, or was it all pure, sweet imagination? :-)
Or any of the scenes, really.
My fav scene was where Grit puts one over on Janx - and steals the number from his phone - just love those small moments that show a character can think on her feet! And of course, Janx is in it! LOL! what more can I say...
Stacia asked:

I'm almost always willing to say what inspired something, if somewhere physical inspired it! But in this case, it was pure imagination. ;)

I agree with Cheryl. The speak easy scene has really stuck with me. It was very vivid when I read it and is still easily recalled now, though I read the book what seems like eons ago. One thing that I very much enjoy about Catie's writing, besides her inherent sense of humor, is her descriptive style.
There were a lot of favorite scenes, but one that comes to mind that hasn't been mentioned (wow, what a run-on sentence) is the clemency announcement. It was a good scene for letting us see Grit as compassionate with her client and able to travel in powerful circles, such as her discussion with the mayor. It sets the stage for her later meetings with Janx, etc., because we've seen her handle this moment well.
Ok, Catie, I wasn't going to say anything about it, but then I looked at your website. Janx, for some reason, looks and sounds like Christopher Lambert in my mind's eye. I just thought you might get a chuckle out of that. I was happy (and sad) to see Immortal Beloved on the list of WiP. Thanks for posting it. I can't wait to read it!
The scene that sticks out most in my mind is the one in the stairwell of Grit's apartment building. Actually, there are two set there and they're both memorable. One is when Grit and Alban almost do the nasty (I'm a sucker for sexual tension, hee hee), and the other is when Alban connects with the memory gestaldt of his race and battles with Biali. Very cool.
Stacey:
*laugh*! Christopher Lambert, huh? I never woulda expected that. Hee hee hee!
I hope you like IMMORTAL BELOVED. It's actually one of my favorite books I've written. :)
