The Book Club for Associate Reluctant Adults

posted by Mark at 11:31 AM

Huge! Big Big News!

You've noticed some changes here at the League over the past couple of weeks and here's another one stemming from our lovely reader's comments. So don't ever say we didn't do nothin' for ya.

We're starting a book club!

Yays!

It took some doing and there's always some hesitancy on the part of authors to talk openly about other author's works. What if we don't like it? Worse...what if we hate it? Then we'll be THOSE authors, the ones making fun of people.

Hiss! Boo!

Well. I'm a big geek and I love a book club. I started a local monthly group and we've been going for the past two years. Some of the books I've loved (Little Children, Shadow of the Wind), some not so much, but in the end, the purpose of a book club is not to find out whether you like a book or not, it's to talk about the emotions and thoughts that resonate from the experience of reading.

We'll pull together some guidelines as we get closer to the big day, but for now...let's do the fun part and pick a book. We nominated 5 in our genre for you guys to choose from and here they are...

Felix Gomez went to Iraq a soldier. He came back a vampire.

Now he finds himself pulled into a web of intrigue when an old friend prompts him to investigate an outbreak of nymphomania at the secret government facilities in Rocky Flats. He'll find out the cause of all these horny women or die trying! But first he must contend with shadowy government agents, Eastern European vampire hunters, and women who just want his body . . .

Skewering sexual myths, conspiracy fables, and government bureaucracy, The Nymphos of Rocky Flats reveals the bizarre world of the undead with a humorous slant and a fresh twist.

Latina Ivy League grad Milagro de Los Santos can't find her place in the world or a man to go with it. Then one night, at a book party for her pretentious ex-boyfriend, she meets an oddly attractive man. After she is bitten while kissing him, she falls ill and is squirreled away to his family's estate to recover. Vampires don't exist in this day and age -- or do they? As Milagro falls for a fabulously inappropriate man, she finds herself caught between a family who has accepted her as one of their own and a shady organization that refuses to let the undead live and love in peace.

No one would call vampire Colin Ames-Beaumont kind, but they would call him unnaturally beautiful. For two centuries his tainted blood has kept him isolated from other vampires, sustained only by his beauty and vanity--bitter comforts, since a curse has erased his mirror reflection, replacing it with a terrifying glimpse of Chaos.

Savi Murray's insatiable curiosity had gotten her into trouble before, but she'd always escaped unscathed. Then came Colin. In the midst of Heaven, he gave her a taste of ecstasy--and of Chaos. Deadly creatures from that realm herald the return of an imprisoned nosferatu horde, and Colin and Savi's bond is their only protection--and their only passion...

Once upon a time, Jezebel was a powerful succubus, capable of seducing men and sucking out their souls. But that was before Hell put a bounty on her head. Now her only chance to escape a fate far worse than death is to live as a mortal, losing herself in a sea of unfamiliar humanity, in a place where sinners walk hand-in-hand with saints--a place like Belle's strip club in New York City.

Working as an exotic dancer is a piece of cake for a former demon who once specialized in sex. Taking money from men? Please. It's like leading lawyers to the Lake of Fire. Plus the lingerie is great. But she hadn't counted on meeting sexy Paul Hamilton, a man haunted by his past. Good-bye, succubus; hello, lovestruck. Learning all about how complicated--and pleasurable--love can be, Jezebel thinks she's turned her back on Hell.

But Hell hasn't stopped looking for her. The secrets Jezebel holds are the most dangerous of all, the kind every demon in the Underworld would do their worst to protect. Demons are closing in, which is enough to make Jezebel shiver in her G-string. But it's her love for Paul that's going to have deadly consequences...

WHAT SECRETS LIE SHROUDED IN DARKNESS?

Okay, so jogging through Central Park after midnight wasn't a bright idea. But Margrit Knight never thought she'd encounter a dark new world filled with magical beings--not to mention a dying woman and a mysterious stranger with blood on his hands. Her logical, lawyer instincts told her it couldn't all be real--but she could hardly deny what she'd seen...and touched. The mystery man, Alban, was a gargoyle. One of the fabled Old Races who had hidden their existence for centuries. Now he was a murder suspect, and he needed Margrit's help to take the heat off him and find the real killer. And as the dead pile up, it's a race against the sunrise to clear Alban's name and keep them both alive...

There you have it. The nominees for our first book club. It's a nice mix of saucy and smarmy, mystery and mockery, don't you think? Tell us what you'd like to read, we'll take votes for a week and then schedule the discussion after we've nailed down the book.

Get to typing, bitches!

And here I thought you made the first book up!

December 12, 2007 1:11 PM

Heart of Stone!! Of course, I'm cheating and have already read it.... Oh, and I've read Kessler's book too. Well, I'm up for anything really.

December 12, 2007 1:21 PM

Anton - Does Mario not have the most awesome titles ever? The sequels are X-rated Bloodsuckers and The Undead Kama Sutra. Brazilliant!

Sadieloree - That's one vote for HoS!

December 12, 2007 1:29 PM

I'm going to vote for Heart of Stone. What if you guys focus on author's you've done interviews with? That would be kind of cool. But they all look good.
(Sadie- I need to borrow the book!)

So will we get to do all of the League's books as well? *innocent smile* (I swear!)

December 12, 2007 1:29 PM

I think Acevedo or Kessler would be my top pick(s). They seem to tie in best with the books of the League.

December 12, 2007 1:36 PM

We could always do Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth.

Oh...wait.

I think I just had an aneurysm.

December 12, 2007 1:49 PM

Nymphos!

December 12, 2007 2:02 PM

I cast my vote for Nymphos, as I have that on hand and find myself unable to have intelligent discourse regarding Demon Moon (squeeing fangirl alert).

Please don't lose my ballot just because I live in Florida.

December 12, 2007 2:02 PM

Heart of Stone! I'm a sucker for a good gargoyle story. 8^)

December 12, 2007 2:39 PM

Me! Me! Me! Pick me!

Um. Well. Is that cheating? :)

-Catie

December 12, 2007 4:29 PM

It's not cheating if you promise to join the discussion ;)

December 12, 2007 4:33 PM

This is Blogspot - you can actually add a proper poll on the sidebar. They have an option for that. Unless you just love getting comments ;-)

I vote Happy Hour at Casa Dracula because it's the only one I've read in full. I've partially read Hell's Belles - I bought it, and started reading it. But then I made the mistake of going to the library, and I've kept going to the library since ;-)

Have a lovely day! :-)

December 12, 2007 7:07 PM

I hopped over to Amazon and read the available excerpts. Wow! Spoiled for choice. But Nymphos gets my vote.

December 13, 2007 12:31 AM

Demon Moon or Heart of Stone. We will get to read your books for the club eventually, right?

December 13, 2007 8:59 AM

We're totally going to do our books at some point. I was hoping someone would nominate Happy Hour and Dead to Me for a zombie showdown over at the big Barnes and Noble Paranormal Book Club. But if that doesn't happen, it'll still happen here.

December 13, 2007 10:01 AM

After mulling it over for a bit, I'm voting for Heart of Stone.

Lisa

December 13, 2007 3:18 PM

The Nymphos of Rocky Flats gets my vote.

(this is a real book right?)

December 13, 2007 5:22 PM

OMG!

Mark and Anton going head to head. I think I might pay to see that.

(still patiently waiting to read Anton's zombie novel)

December 13, 2007 5:25 PM

Tally so far...

Nymphos - 4 1/2
Happy Hour - 1
Belles - 1/2
Demon - 1/2
HoS - 4 1/2

I put the half votes in there because people kept saying "either blank or blank", *cough* Todd and Alexa.

Oh and help us out and tell people about the club. The more the merrier.

December 14, 2007 2:45 PM

If it's not to late. Heart of Stone

December 15, 2007 9:02 PM

nymphos

December 16, 2007 12:14 AM

Hmmm...I've read Hell's Belles, so that'd be cheating.

So my vote goes for... (Oh, god it's hard to choose.)

Heart of Stone.

Because I want to read some gargoyle stuff.

December 17, 2007 7:53 AM

I've read Heart of Stone, and I really liked it.

My vote is for Happy Hour at Casa Dracula. Been meaning to get to that one for a while.

December 17, 2007 10:01 AM

Vote Update:

Nymphos - 5 1/2
Happy Hour - 2
Belles - 1/2
Demon - 1/2
HoS - 6 1/2

December 17, 2007 12:02 PM

I vote for Heart of Stone, although they all look great.

December 17, 2007 12:31 PM

Reupdate. I had to pull a couple more votes from the LJ feed...oops.

Nymphos - 5 1/2
Happy Hour - 2
Belles - 1 1/2
Demon - 1/2
HoS - 8 1/2

December 17, 2007 12:44 PM

I vote for HoS. Have to support my CoH buddy.

December 17, 2007 12:46 PM

They all sound great, but I'm going to vote for Happy Hour at Casa Dracula.

December 17, 2007 9:22 PM

Umm! They'd all make it onto my TBR list, but I'm voting for HOS - I've got a soft spot for gargoyles ;) and I have this tiny inkling (thanks to amazon's wish list!) that it's going to be in my xmas stocking *g*
